Frontera Sol of Mexico @ Jaya One

Last weekend, I joined the Foodirector Hangout #4 at Frontera Sol of Mexico in Jaya One. It was my first time joining their event and I was excited :D Frontera is a restaurant that serves authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine!

The new group menu is designed for 10 pax and above, at RM60++ per person. We got to try it out during the food tasting session. Of course, most of the items are available for a la carte as well :)

Watermelon Agua Fresca

A chilled drink with a mix of watermelon juice and lime. It is very refreshing and quite sour due to the lime. I felt that the amount of lime in it was slightly too much for my liking where I couldn't taste much watermelon. If they cut down on the lime, it would be perfect :)

Top-Shelf Guacamole served on Tortilla Sombrero

The guacamole is amazing! Fresh avocado is mashed, added with some spice and topped with tomatoes. A good starter to open up the appetite :) Love the hint of spiciness!

Jalapeno Crab Cakes served with roasted Jalapeno Remoulade

The insides are generously filled with crabmeat!

Jicama Salad

Shredded sengkuang with orange, cucumber, capsicum, cayan, pepper, avocado and mint! Sour, spicy and tangy, everything must be mixed well and eaten together to balance out the taste :) Refreshing and spicy at the same time!

Chicken Enchiladas

Chicken is wrapped with tortilla and topped with melted cheese! Tasted like nachos to me xD Baked beans was alright. The rice on the other hand was delicious and fragrant!

Baja-style Fish Tacos

The batter used for the fish is crispy and yummy! Very flavourful especially when wrapped together in taco filled with spicy vegetables.

Prawn Chimichanga

Prawns wrapped with spicy baked beans and topped with cheese. Bitting into the fresh juicy prawns and spicy sensation was a delight. However, it was quickly overpowered by the cheese.

Impossible Chocolate Flan

Plus point for this dessert is that it's not too sweet. However, it can be improved as the caramel custard was too soft and the cake was slightly dry.

Give
us a little background on the band and the members?

OK,
well I (Liam Revenge) moved to Cape Town about two years ago from
Manchester, England, and my background is in punk and psychobilly.
Before I came here I was playing in a band called the Hyperjax, who
are relatively well-known within the scene. We wrote and recorded an
album released on Cherry Red Records, the biggest independent label
in the UK, and toured all over Europe. Moving here cut that short, so
naturally when I came to Cape Town I wanted to start something along
the lines of psychobilly, but maybe not quite so rigid, generically
speaking.

How
did you all meet?

I
was introduced to Ronnie by Kyle, of Capetonian neo-rockabilly band The
Ratrod Cats. I was bowled over by his enthusiasm and even moreso by his
drumming. He brought Zoltan in and eventually we added Sven from The
Pits on guitar.

"We incorporate elements of rockabilly, rhythm’n’blues,
psychobilly, punk rock, rock’n’roll - hell even country and folk."

What
does your music sound like?

We
all come from different musical backgrounds so what goes in is a real
mish-mash of genres but hopefully what comes out is a cohesive sound.

psychobilly, punk rock, rock’n’roll - hell even country and folk.

Who
or what inspires your music?

Musically,
Th’Legendary Shackshakers, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, The Pine Hill
Haints, Those Poor Bastards, King Salami, Bloodshot Bill, Reverend
Beatman. Any band that is brave enough to break out of the strict
generic boundaries and play whatever the damn hell they want.
Lyrically, I’m influenced by local folklore, ol’ time religion
and other Southern Gothic themes.

So, what
do you guys do before a gig?

Soundcheck,
usually.

And
after?

Sweat
profusely.

What
do you guys do besides making music? Any day jobs?

Music
IS my day job. Besides Th’Crows I also play with The Dixie Pricks
and have done sessions stuff for Them Tornados and Dallas &
Alexia. I also run a monthly club night at Mercury called Shake Some
Action which hosts bands and rock ‘n roll DJs, and a weekly radio
show on Assembly Radio. You can check us out at

Best
memory since being a band?

Playing
Synergy on a Saturday evening, only two or three months after our
debut show was pretty special. Thanks to Mike and the Your LMG team
for that one!

Favourite
venue or festival to play at?

Mercury
is always a great venue – great sound, good stage, brilliant staff
and we always pull a crowd there.

And the
one festival or venue you really want to still play (local or
international)?

Damn,
there are a whole mess of ‘em in Europe and the US we’d like to
play. We’ve been in contact with some and they’ve shown interest,
it’s just the financial logistics of getting four of us over there,
y’know? But I would LOVE to play Bedlam Breakout in England again,
but with Th’Crows. Also Muddy Roots in Nashville has some exciting
bands on the line-up. Sjock in Belgium is always amazing. Plus
Psychomania Rumble, Pineda, all the Euro fests are always amazing, to
be fair.

Which
local artist/s would you most likely collaborate with?

We’ve
been lucky enough to play with a lot of our favourite local bands:
Them Tornados, Ratrod Cats, Dave Ferguson, Dallas & Alexia, The
Pits, Jet Black Camaro etc. We’re looking at setting up shows with
Dead Lucky, The Bone Collectors, Crimson House Blues, Sixgun Gospel.
Those are bands we dig.

Tell us about your fans? Any funny groupie stories?

None
we could repeat here, I’m sure!

Roughest
as in violent? None. Cape Town crowds are sedate compared to UK
crowds, where broken teeth, arms, hands and spirits are commonplace
at psychobilly shows. Capetonians are FAR too laid-back when it comes
to gigs. We wanna bring the violence back!

Where
is your next gig?

On
April 12 at Mercury with The Dollfins, whom we rate very highly, and
The Stellas from Johannesburg. It should be a lot of fun. The
promoters are cool people and Mercury is a great venue, so we’re
pretty excited. We’re also playing Steamdrunk Steampunk on April
13. There are a whole lot more coming up in the next couple of months

Your plans
for the rest of 2013?

Record
th’debut album, write a whole load of new songs, play more gigs,

Sowing the Seeds 2013

With winter almost
rearing its head, the opportunity for a fun-filled weekend of camping and top quality
music in a beautiful setting is drawing to a close for a few months. Luckily,
Sowing the Seeds will be taking place on the 24^th and 25^th
of May at a new venue in the Mpumalanga Highveld. The five-star Welgelegen
Manor Estate, possibly one of the most beautiful settings in South Africa, will
host this year’s Sowing the Seeds.

Also
known as the teaser
for the annual Rocking The Daisies event, Sowing the Seeds promises to
blow your minds as we give festival-goers from Mpumalanga, Gauteng and
surrounding
provinces a chance to experience the ‘green’ activities and festivities
that
take place on a more intimate scale.

Taking place on the outskirts of
the
beautiful Mpumalanga province, the spectacular new venue, with roots in
the Rocking The Daisies venue – Cloof Wine Estate, will boast two stages
hosting
the top music acts, delicious food and engaging activations as well as
many outstanding ‘green’ initiatives.

DOGTOWN RELEASES NEW SINGLE

PRESS RELEASE

Dogtown
releases their second single titled “Are you alive”. Combining the
lyrics and music, it was obvious the sound of the song had to be as
extensive as possible, to obtain the impact they wanted. Instrument
arrangement and with some effects, the end result reflects the stadium
rock vibe they hoped to achieve.

Their
previous single “Sunshine” received airplay on the following Radio
stations : 5fm, 94.5Kfm, 2Oceansvibe Radio (which featured on the Top 10
of the Tenacious Rock Chart), UCT Radio, VOWfm, Zone Radio, Afm,
Assembly Radio , to name a select view.

"This
song was written to inspire people to believe in their dreams, have the
courage to follow them and make it happen. If you don't go out and
chase them with all you have, you're not living the one life you have. A
certain saying pretty much sums it up. 'If your dreams don't scare you,
they aren't big enough'. One small chance, is still a chance, we're
happy to take the odds. "

Dogtown consists
of Bennie van der Merwe (Vocals), Tyan Odendal (Lead Guitar), Sias
Visagie (Rhythm Guitar), Nelis Uys (Drummer) and JP le Roux (Bass
Guitar). Since their inception in 2011 they have gained admirable
terrain due to their hardworking demeanour, powerhouse live performances
and passion for music. Their timbre infuses elements of indie, rock and
pop to reflect each member's influences into one unique sound.

“Are you alive” as well as the rest of Dogtown's material was recorded at Coffee Stained Vinyl Studio
with Teejay Terblanche (Producer, Engineer) and Reichar Onraet
(Editor). The choice of where to record your material is always a
daunting task, to find someone who will incorporate your style into a
well refined product rounded off with professionalism. Coffee Stained
Vinyl Studio's managed to capture Dogtown's eclectic sound to their
satisfaction.
