Hot Heels Africa 2013:
An Adrenaline Packed Downhill Racing Success
December 2013 began with an impressive start to the summer festive season in the Kogelberg Biosphere for the talented downhill skaters and luges of Hot Heels Africa.
Downhill Skateboarding has become increasingly popular amongst all onlookers, and this year proved to be a thrilling performance by extreme sportsmen and women from around the world that came to compete for the SA Championship titles...
Organised by SAGRA, and now in its tenth year running, Hot Heels Africa has been sanctioned by the IGSA for the past 10 Hot Heels Africa events HHA was however not sanctioned by the International sanctioning body this year, as the time was used to place more focus on the hugely popular and rapidly growing local downhill skating scene.
Aiming to encourage qualities of good sportsmanship and courage, SAGRA enabled HHA2013 to foster friendships with gravity racers in South Africa, and around the world. Despite Mandela's passing on the Friday, 05 December, people remained optimistic, with a sense of unity and youthful energy keeping his spirit and tenacity for life alive. Gravity racing is certainly not for the faint-hearted as it takes plenty of commitment, gut, determination, balance, and speed. Especially when challenged with near gale-force tailwinds!
Massive congratulations to the following winners for having competed in and ultimately winning the South African Championship Series to be crown the SA Champs of 2013:
Open - Decio Lourenco
Junior 2 - Henry Muller
Junior 1 - Kienan Dunn
Ladies - Gabi Murray-Roberts
Masters - John Upham
Street Luge - Glen Phillips
Classic Luge - Glen Phillips
The event would not have been possible without the loyal support of this year's sponsors;
Cape Whale Coast
Baboon Boards
Boardhub
Cornerstone
Flatline SA
G-Form
Longboarding SA
Longboarding Warehouse
Peg
Puma
Rayne Longboards
RedBull
Sector 9
Stretch Tents International
The attendance of supportive spectators over the course of the weekend generated approximately R10 000 that was donated towards the Kogelberg Biosphere.
It was a thrilling and successful weekend for Hot Heels Africa 2013. There can only be growth for gravity racing in South Africa, and HHA will continue to promote downhill racing disciplines and push the boundaries for these exciting sports.
Get ready, 2014 is right around the bend!
