The Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference presented by Black Mango took place this weekend at the city hall in Cape Town. The second annual conference set the platform for individuals interested in specifically the African music community to network with professionals and gain knowledge on all aspects of the industry.
Following the huge success of the conference in 2013, the organisers of this year's conference made sure that they offered attendees a full program combining panel discussions, workshops, presentations, technical demos and more. The conference closed on a high note with the Unity Jam held on Sunday at Langa township.
One of the main objectives of this year's conference was to attract a diverse audience from the local community to interact at the event and to acquire as much knowledge from the industry as possible. Like last year, attendees had the opportunity to take part in numerous panel discussions, workshops, presentations, technical demos and more. With each discussion or workshop, audiences were offered to ask questions or challenge the panel. Through these interactions the conference ensured that each attendee maximised their experience and gathered as much information as possible.
The conference saw important international and local professionals in the music industry share information with attendees. From artists and media to producers and journalists came together over the two days to network with the audience and amongst themselves and share knowledge of their various professions. Musicians such as Arno Carstens (The Springbok Nude Girls), Jeremy de Tolly (Dirty Skirts) and John Savage (5FM) gave their insightful opinions on interesting topics, while industry experts including Myles Keylock (Editor in Chief at Rolling Stone Magazine), Valentino Barriosetta (Bridges for Music) and Espera Donouvossi (Arterial Network) highlighted some of the difficult challenges the industry face and discussed possible solutions.
This year’s conference saw the inclusion of Breathe Sunshine Connect, a addition of the conference that was entirely dedicated to the digital space. Lead by African Dope Records founder Roach Roth, Connect brought together some of the sharpest minds in the digital media and music industries to explore the current situation and how the industry can better itself in the future. International charity Bridges for Music also hosted a program on electronic music.
The African music industry is expanding fast, yet the continent still face major challenges that needs to be overcome. The conference tackled these challenges and panel discussions were held on topics such as the future of rock music in South Africa, the future of radio in Africa and touring in Africa. Various workshops offered interested individuals the opportunity to learn the finer tips and tricks of the industry. Experts from the media and various brands lead the workshops and created a relaxed and informal atmosphere where attendees could take part in the discussion.
The Unity Jam, held on Sunday, was an incredible success and the artists had a fantastic time performing to a large, lively crowd. The line-up included the international reggae star, Gentleman from Germany, who performed for the first time in South Africa. Local artists included Jeremy Loops, IFani, Diloxclusiv featuring Jimmy Dludlu and more.
The main vision of the Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference is to build a successful music industry on the African continent and to ensure that professionals and up-coming individuals have a solid platform to collaborate and share knowledge. The conference strives to inspire and empower the community to work together to make this a reality.
